Sexy Winter Tights

I look forward to winter as an excuse to ‘bundle up in knitwear and cosy coats’. But the plummeting temperatures have a frosty downside for your wardrobe too, namely giving up the lure of bare legs.

If ‘tights’ are your thing, then forget about the standard black 80 denier black opaques. It’s all about cool patterned offerings.

  • Shirt, £35, Topshop
  • Bodysuit, £8, Boohoo
  • Tights, £19.99, Trasparenze
  • Heels, £19.99, New Look

Not generally known for putting function first, the fashion industry has for once embraced tights.

Designer brand bosses usually like to imagine that everyone has as big a budget for Ubers as they do, and therefore will never need to shiver after a big winter night out. In previous years, tights had almost zero protection against the elements.

This season however, warm legs have received the seal of approval from big-name brands such as Burberry, Fendi and Balenciaga. And even the world of celebrity has wrapped up and gone all “sensible”.

Our favourite TV psychopath Villanelle — Jodie Comer from Killing Eve — teamed her little black dress with a barely-there pair.

Actresses Katie Holmes, Reese Witherspoon and singer Rihanna have all pulled on sheer styles too.

A thinner denier looks great with a shorter hemline as they flatter your legs instead of camouflaging them, which a thicker count will.

Lighter deniers will also look party-ready, while still providing some coverage, meaning you won’t be left with goose pimpled flesh by the end of the night.

And midi skirts might be a big hit this season, but the right pair of tights will see you being able to wear minis right through until spring.

There are a host of styles and deniers to choose from — from the classic 20 or 30 denier count that will go with anything in your winter wardrobe, to Sixties-inspired polka dot prints, and even out-of-this-world star designs.

  • Bodysuit, £45, Dusty Daze at Asos
  • Tights, £14, Pretty Polly
  • Shoes, £59, Carvela at Kurt Geiger

And if you are unlucky enough to cause a rip in your pair — a blob of clear nail varnish or spritz of hairspray will stop a ladder from spreading further.

  • Jumper, £85, & Other Stories
  • Tights, £11, Calzedonia
  • Shoes, £59, Kurt Geiger
  • Bodysuit, £12, Boohoo
  • Panelled tights, £15.99, Le Bourget
  • Shoes, £59, Kurt Geiger

… a word from Amanda

It’s November, and I’m back in the UK, after a week of scary moments – none of which were Halloween-related.

Happy Halloween by the way… and the best costume goes to….

I took a week off from writing Zips It Up to spend some time with my parents at our house in Ibiza.

It was October half term, which generally holds a 50/50 chance of decent Balearic weather. Certainly, in previous years I have come back with a suntan, having spent a week by the pool, enjoying some late summer sunshine.

But not in 2019. Instead, our neighbourhood in Ibiza was struck by a tornado, which ripped apart some parts of our house, over seven minutes of pure hell. I was on the terrace with my mother, watching the dark skies above, when the wind and rain suddenly cranked into a state of mayhem and we ran for our lives.

I posted pics of the storm and the damage it caused on my Facebook page this week, if you want to have a “nosey”.

Anyway, suffice to say, I didn’t get any shopping done and didn’t come back with a tan.

And guess what? Typically, it’s absolutely beautiful in the Balearics this week, now we’re back home in London.

At least it’s something to tell the grandkids one day.

Anyway, moving on, it’s now November and time to crack on with winter and Christmas. This week, I zip uppossibly the most extravagant Christmas advent calendar ever, take a look at next year’s must have footwear and break the news that my favourite Gallagher brother has lost his fashion label.

Footwear 2020

Yeezy Crocs in 2020

It’s November, so let’s start looking forward to 2020’s most random footwear fad.  And the first person to set the trend is a six year-old.

It’s rare for a six-year-old to cause such a ruckus, but when said child is North West, the daughter of two of the most famous people in the world, and she’s wearing her Dad’s (Kanye West’s) new Yeezy range, we pay attention.

North was pictured at Disneyland with her mum Kim Kardashian earlier this summer, sporting an unconventional white foam slipper.

The sartorial choice raised eyebrows at the time, but now all the pieces of the puzzle are slotting into place. Instagram account ‘YeezyMafia’, which has a following of 2.1million, has leaked images of the shoe, reportedly named the Yeezy Foam Runner.

The shoe, which Twitter users are dubbing ‘Yeezy Crocs’, appears to be constructed of a foam material and perforated sole, similar to that of Crocs.

It’s believed that the Yeezy Foam Runner will be available sometime in 2020, although no official statements from the brand have been made about a release date or its price point.

Would we wear them? They’re still ‘Crocs’ in nature, but adorned with the infinitely cooler Yeezy label.

I’m a fashion victim, so it’s a yes from me.

Pretty Green Rescued From Administration

Liam Gallagher’s fashion label Pretty Green has been saved from administration by JD Sports with debts of £17.5million. The considerable list of creditors includes some high profile (and rather ironic) fashion names like Oasis and All Saints.

The Company’s debts also include £500 to Oasis Air Conditioning, of Shirley, West Mids and £82,000 to high street store All Saints, to be clear, not his ex-wife’s band All Saints.

Pretty Green was sold this year after it went into administration. Papers filed at Companies House reveal the firm’s creditors also included two window cleaners, owed £870 and £250.

The clothing brand, launched in 2009, specialised in Liam-style parkas and button-down shirts.

Blurb for the range noted that the clothing was designed by the singer himself, with a team of industry pros on board to help out. At the time, Liam made the earth-shattering revelation: “The reason I’m doing it is I like clothes.”

The firm has been bought by JD Sports after 11 stores and 33 concessions were shut down. Only the flagship Manchester branch was kept open. Companies House documents also show that £100,000 was owed to HM Revenue & Customs. Facebook was owed £100,000 and £527,000 was due to a freight company based at Heathrow Airport.

Liam didn’t seem too upset about the sale, tweeting (as he always does), “As long as we’ve got our health eh gotta put things into perspective as you were PG I mean, LG x”.

Shame.  I thought it was a cool label. And its offices were next door to my other half’s music law firm.

The Ultimate Xmas Advent Calendar

You probably last opened a Christmas advent calendar, filled with seasonal chocolates, when you were 8 years old.  And of course,  the entire month’s worth of choccies were probably devooured by Dec 2nd.

Well, we’ve grown up, and so have advent calendars. Forget chocolate filled windows – this has to be the ultimate beauty blogger and fashionista’s advent dream.

The MAC beauty advent calendar for 2019 goes on sale today and includes skincare as well as makeup goodies.

I’m a MAC fan and all my favourite products in mini version are a wonderful treat, in the lead up to the big day. But MAC’S countdown doesn’t come cheap, with the beautifully designed box costing £129.

Last year saw MAC release its first ever advent calendar, Shiny Pretty Things, which was a stand-out hit with beauty fans, and included the all the MAC cults. This year’s countdown is expected to sell out super-fast. So be sure get yours very soon – it makes a great Christmas present.

Welcome to this verywet and miserable UK mid-October. For those of you attempting ‘Stoptober’, you really must be struggling with demons right now as it’s raining everywhere here in the UK, every day, all the time. Depressing. I need my “wine time” on a Saturday night just to combat the shorter-day blues.

As we lament the loss of sunshine and deal with the wind and rain, it’s our skin that needs most attention. I have just been sent a brilliant new face masque by my skincare Guru Sophie Jane Hopwood, winging its way to our London office from the Balearics. This stuff is incredible, and I genuinely mean that.

We’re talking Skincerity. A roll-on breathable masque you sleep in, revealing radiant skin when you peel it off in the morning.

When first starting to use Skincerity, you should apply it nightly for a minimum of two weeks. This will maximize the rejuvenation of any dry, damaged skin. You should be able to see improvements to your complexion during this initial period. Thereafter, at least four times per week, rolled-on before sleeping.

I’m super impressed. This is my skin after using it for three days – all my friends gave it top marks too.

So, if you fancy trying this miracle product, please contact Sophie via her Facebook page or Instagram @playhouseeventsmallorca @mallorcamummy

Onto this week’s Zips It Up and we introduce Victoria’s Secret’s new size 14 model, check out Nike’s ‘holy trainers’, plus you can now snuggle up in warm and cosy Pringle jumpers with matching garments for your dog, courtesy of H&M. Yes, really.

Jesus Trainers

$3,000 Jesus trainers filled with holy water and bearing a crucifix are the newest way to blaspheme or worship, depending on your viewpoint. Yes, these Air Max 97s come in white, and carry 60ccs of holy water from the river Jordan in their sole.

After Crocs’ collaboration with Balenciaga, I didn’t think fashion link-ups could possibly get any crazier. Well I was wrong. Yes, a sneaker company has now collaborated with… Jesus? MSCHFhave been divinely inspired to create these customised Nike sneakers, resplendent with a bunch of heavenly features. In addition to holy water, these white Air Maxes give a nod to the red shoes recently worn by Pope Benedict XVI – their insoles bear the same fiery colouring.

Just to make them extra holy, MSCHF have added a crucifix onto the front and a Matthew 14:25 inscription. If that wasn’t enough to justify the whopping $3,000 (£2,451) price tag, they’re scented with Frankincense and made with Frankincense wool, to represent one of the gifts given to the baby Jesus upon his birth.

The Brooklyn-based brand are calling it the ‘Jesus Shoe’- guaranteed to be a be a big hit with Kanye and attendees of his famous Sunday services.

The original RRP was $1,425 (£1,164), but because they sold out so quickly, the trainers are now over double the price. So they weren’t wrong in creating this product.

It’s worth noting that there’s no official link with Nike. They were bought and customised by MSCHF. They drop new styles biweekly, with 11am releases on the second and fourth Tuesday of each month.

H&M Pringle Collection For Dogs

It’s not only us in oversized knitwear from now until next Spring – it’s our pets too. Autumn / Winter is officially here, and thanks to H&M’s new dog jumpers, you and your pup can wear the same winter warmers in harmony with one another.

The collection is a collaboration with Pringle of Scotland. It features cute patterned jumpers, trousers, skirts and scarves – and it won’t break the bank.

The Instagram potential is limitless. Get down to the park and start frolicking with your pug in the crisp, autumn leaves, or take cute selfies with your pooch on a winter walk, both wearing perfectly matching ensembles.

The best thing about the range is that it’s seriously chic. It reworks the iconic argyles and jacquards of Pringle to make it more youthful and sporty, which I love. It also features the biggest colours of the season; grey and neon green. The range is part of H&M’s Conscious collection, meaning each item has been made with recycled polyester and organic cotton.

Victoria’s Secret First Size 14 Model

Victoria’s Secret might not immediately come to mind straight away when one thinks of “inclusive” brands. Historically, it’s been all about stick thin, super tall, perfect ‘angels’, such as Kendal Jenner or Giselle.

But the company has had no choice but to change things up. Hoping to address years of backlash over the size of its models, Victoria’s Secret has finally started an about-turn.

Ali Tate Cutler is the first size 14 (size 16 in the U.K) model to be involved in a VS lingerie campaign. The move comes after the American retailer joined forces with London-based lingerie brand Bluebella, which employs plus size women. Cutler took to Instagram to point out that she’s not the first plus-size model for the brand, but that she is the first size 14 – the average size of American women.

While Ali is a part of the Blubella for Victoria’s Secret partnership, she hasn’t been officially hired by the latter to model for them. Her involvement is just for this joint-venture lingerie campaign, but Ali is thankful for the opportunity. ‘Size 14 is actually the average size of women in America and I do think that we need to see more of it in media and fashion, because most women are that size,’ she said. ‘For Victoria’s Secret I am so excited that they decided to put a size 14 women like me on the wall,’ she added. ‘I feel like they are headed in the right direction and they are listening to their audience, who have requested to see more women of diverse shapes and sizes’.

“Bluebella for Victoria’s Secret” line includes lingerie, sleepwear, and hosiery, featuring luxe details, including velvet, satin, and embroidered lace. Initially, the line was only available at select Victoria’s Secret stores in the US, where it launched last week. But worry not, it’s now available at stores in the UK as of 11 October.

Welcome to this autumnal edition of Zips It Up.

As we wave goodbye to Summer, the Fashion Weeks, which signal the beginning of a new season, have come to the end via the Milan instalment.

My favourite Italian label, Gucci, had an ‘eventful’ time, unveiling their predictions for the next big footwear and bag trends on the Milan catwalk.

Gucci’s latest offering are shoes that look like you’re wearing an electronic tag. Yes, the Italian brand’s design makes wearers look like prisoners with an ankle bracelet to monitor their movements.

The bonkers “bracelet” is actually a leather strap which can carry lipsticks — and can also be worn around the wrist. It has also been incorporated into leather gloves – which usually cost around £350 a pair. It could be used by dog-walkers to stash their poo bags. Just a thought.

Another bizarre fashion accessory for next year is a backpack made of leather straps to carry a pillow or sleeping bag.

Model Ayesha Tan Jones – who identifies as non-binary – appeared in the show, with the words “mental health is not fashion” on the palms of the models’ hands – which they held up while on the runway.

Gucci commented: “The show presented how society today can have the ability to confine individuality and how Gucci can be the antidote. It was a journey from conformity to freedom and creativity.

It’s safe to say Fashion NEVER gets boring. Or unpretentious.

Onto this week’s instalment, and we check out the new ‘Exposed Thong’ trend, discover new customised Ibiza wedding and party label Hathor and roll up our sleeves to clean the Thames riverside from Richmond to Kingston with #OnePureSea.
