Hollywood Goes Pink

As the awards season ends, the grand finale event in the 2019 calendar was the 91stAnnual Academy Awards. ‘The Oscars’ to you and me.

While 2018’s awards season saw fashion take a back seat, with many stars hitting the red carpet almost exclusively in black, in solidarity with the Time’s Up #MeToo movement, this season witnessed a return to insane shapes and sizes and plenty of colour.

And, on Sunday night, one hue reigned supreme: pink in all its glorious forms. The Oscars 2019 stars embraced an array of deliciously frilly and effervescent fuchsia and bubble gum pink frocks.

Gemma Chan led the pretty parade in a voluminous Valentino gown that, literally, had Celine Dion weeping when it first graced the catwalk at the brand’s couture show in January.

Julia Roberts didn’t show up until the end — when she presented the award for Best Picture — but she wore the colour of the night, with heels to match.

Dame Helen Mirren, herself wearing a hot pink gown by Schiaparelli, acknowledged the hue’s dominance in the room as she presented the award for Best Documentary with actor Jason Momoa, Aquaman, who wore a pink Tux, commenting “I swear to God, Jason and I didn’t coordinate our outfits tonight.

And perhaps, after all, that’s the point. Just as colour is not gendered, femininity and power can be just as easily found among layers of pink tulle as they can a black tuxedo.

Here’s the best of the rest. Long may Pink make us wink.
