NIke Trainer Kitten Heels

Kitten heels made from Nike trainers have been hailed ‘the summer shoe of 2019’, and footwear fanatics have described the bizarre shoes as everything from “brilliant” to “disgusting”. As for me, I find them quirky and cool in a “Lady Ga Ga” kind of way.

Romanian designer Ancuta Sarca, based in London, has given the classic trainer a complete makeover. Ancuta ‘upcycles’ an assortment of different shoes, but her ‘Nike collection’ is proving the most controversial.

Sharing snaps of her footwear on Instagram, Ancuta’s posts have been liked thousands of times. She captions posts with a variety of phrases, including “Nike all the way please”, “same old trainers”, “in my upcycled croc Nikes” and “upcycled shoes by me.”

With a pair of cut offs and tanned legs this summer, I reckon they’ll be a fun talking point and reasonably safe to wear when falling out of a club or pool party.

The fact that they are colourful makes them a great party shoe, and if you’re brave enough, you could pair them with tights or jeans in cooler temperatures.

I’d sooner wear these than the talked-about bejewelled Crocs. In fact, they take the athleisure look to another level. Ancuta has given trainers a completely new function, pushed the boundaries and I salute her.

Their official title is the ‘Frankenstein Nike Hybrid’. Check out her Instagram: ancutasarcafor prices.

… a word from the Editor Amanda

Another weekend on the white isle, another night out at Pikes Ibiza. And I’m still alive. Phew.

As the summer kicks off, the Boho Balearic look is filtering back to the UK, just in time for us to pack our suitcases for summer hols.

Regular readers will know that I am partial to a “hippy chic” hat. Here’s a designer who has managed to sum up the general mood of  hippy chic, with a boutique collection of hats destined to be seen from Glasto to Port Adriano to Playa D’en Bossa.

Lisa Negus – customised hat designer and founder of Hippychic Beach Boutique, decided just 6 weeks ago to make a business out of her love of festival hats, which fit the Balearic vibe perfectly.

Lisa, like many of us, visits Ibiza at least 3 times a year, so she’s in tune with Balearic boho. Here’s a look at her current collection, and the ‘star’ hat is on its way to my front door. Suffice to say, you can catch me in it all summer long.

As with many of the folk I interview for Zips It Up, I asked Lisa about her favourite places on the island. Lisa’a favourite hotels include the Hacienda Na Xamena and Las Brisas de Ibiza Boutique Hotel.

Lisa’s favourite restaurants include The Boat House Ibiza, and like so many of us, she is an avid Pikes fan, enjoying how Pikes as a hotel, club and restaurant has cornered the “slightly older yet still cool” Ibiza tourist market.

Lisa is hoping to spend more time in Ibiza and Mallorca to sell her hats and develop her business and I’m helping her along the way. The hats are, quite simply, fabulous.

Onto this week’s instalment, and we learn how to use ‘tit tape’, dive into denim speedos and discover Sneaker/Trainer Artist Ken Solomon.

Denim Speedos

Okay – summer can mean many things. Blue skies, long days, warm nights and holiday adventures. And of course, Speedos.

Budgie smugglers. The banana hammock.  Call them what you will, it’s well known that tiny men’s swimming pants are pretty much never okay. That is, of course, unless you fancy these handsome briefs.

The Jeaudo. Jean Speedos.

These denim-print swimmers will turn heads.  Whether worn lounging by the pool with a cold beer in Ibiza, soaking up some rays on Margate Beach, or simply embarrassing the family in the back garden.

The Dayton Dong Sarong Jeado Swim Brief has landed, at around £30 a pop. It comes in sizes S through to XXL (you wish). Though they reportedly fit ‘tight’, meaning that the manufacturers suggest buying one size up.

They’re quick-drying, soft and ‘smooth onto your gear’, and are fully lined with an elastic waistband and drawstring. To avoid unseemly slips. Featuring a hi-res denim design, the shell is made from 88 percent polyester and 12 per cent spandex (everyone loves a bit of spandex), whilst the lining is 100 percent polyester.  I just about know my Spandex from my Polyester.

If you want to grab people’s attention without having quite so much on show, you might prefer to invest in these shorts, emblazoned with your loved one’s face.

The trunks are by Yes Custom and cost £23.05 plus a £4.60 shipping fee. They’re a no-brainer to sort. Allyou need to do is visit the Yes Custom site, upload a selfie and the rest is pretty easy to do.

How To Wear Secret Tape

These celebs turned heads in daring low-cut frocks at Sunday’s TV Baftas.Leaving me wondering how they avoided that most dreaded of wardrobe mishaps.

Sagging boobs.

The secret is simple – here’s an £8 breast tape put to the test with all those revealing outfits that require your boobs to be “perter” than a girl on the moon.

Susanna Reid, 48

The presenter looked stylish in her sheer and embellished neckline.

Step 1: Place the tape vertically over the breast, starting underneath, going over the nipple and finish at the top, pushing up and in as you go.

Step 2: Repeat the action for each side, leaving the middle clear for cleavage.

It keeps the bust in place and minimises the risk of any wardrobe malfunctions. Plus, you won’t feel restricted in it.

Jodie Comer, 26

The Killing Eve actress  had a style to die for with this asymmetric neckline gown.

Step 1: Begin by applying under the armpit and stretching up to the shoulder to create a lift.

Step 2: Apply tape to opposite breast by placing diagonally across body, pushing the breast in as you go.

Step 3: Secure at the same point on the shoulder as the previous strip.

Step 4: Finish off with a strap across the body underneath the breasts for extra support, and place over nipple covers.

This one really defines the shape of one’s boobs and makes sure they’re going to stay in place and look their best. Bit have far more support than in a regular strapless bra.

Keeley Hawes, 43

The Bodyguard star might well have needed an escort in this strapless neckline dress.

Step 1: Start with tape under bust for a slight lift, apply from bottom of your armpit and stretch horizontally across the body, finishing at the other armpit.

Step 2: Keep bust in its natural position as you go.

Boobsaren’t going anywhere – they’re going to stay firmly in place all night long, even when you hit the dancefloor.

Charlotte Hawkins, 43

The Newsreader wore this structured plunge style.

Step 1: To keep your bust in place in a low-cut, structured neckline, tape from under the armpit, horizontally across the breast, finishing just past the nipple. Repeat on the other side.

Step 2: Create cleavage by taping diagonally from under the armpit and into a point on the torso.

This has pushed her boobs together to create a nice firm cleavage. Surprisingly it’s really comfortable and feels like everything is where it should be.

DJ Maya,  Stormzy’s other half,  shimmered in a push-up neckline, ina white dress with tassel details

Step 2: Push the breast up from underneath and finish off with tape under the armpit.

Step 3: Repeat on the other side to make a cross shape, creating a more defined cleavage.

This look is quite uncomfortable – I couldn’t imagine spending the whole night like this. But the support is so good. It really adds volume to your chest.

Rochelle Humes, 30

This isa super low-plunge neckline frock.

Step 1: Start with the tape under the breast, push the breast up and apply tape, reaching to the shoulder.

Step 2: Repeat on the other side – leaving a gap for cleavage.

Boobs have been lifted so well here, there’s no chance of them moving.

This is great for plunge dresses that are usually difficult to find undies for.

The Sneaker Artist – Ken Solomon

Here comes the sophisticated arty bit of Zips It Up…. Can you tell the difference between these artist illustrations and the real thing? Nope, neither can I.

For some, shoes are a thing of convenience to slip on without much afterthought. For many others, however, footwear means so much more — she says, having witnessed husband and son endlessly checking out new trainers on the internet.

Artist Ken Solomonis a self-declared sneakerhead and expresses this passion through these watercolour paintings of trainers. He’s from Brooklyn, New York.

When asked what inspired him to paint trainers, Solomon said: “I love the idea of hundreds of objects that share virtually the exact same form, all oriented the same way. But within that form, they all have a completely unique look, style and visual flavour.”

When Solomon started these paintings, he chose styles based on personal nostalgia. They were reflections and representations of trainers or sneakers that he had worn in the past.

For the painter, sneakers have a deeper meaning than just a type of shoe.

“They represent people,” explained Solomon. “So much of what I do uses iconographic, commercially recognizable imagery and subjects but then is about personal taste and about dialogue.”

Solomon’s ultrarealistic paintings are no simple task. The artist said that the two most challenging types of sneakers to paint are “contemporary running shoes, with their tiny tight mesh patterns and wildly busy textures, as well as all-white, relatively flat textured plain sneakers since all-white is painted by looking at shadows and contrasts that pop off of an all-white sheet of paper.”

If he had to choose one shoe that personifies him, Solomon nominated the original Adidas Stan Smith sneaker. “Classic. Appears simple, but complicated to paint,” Salomon said.

If you fancy one of these up in your lounge or bedroom:

… a word from the Editor & An Interview With Tony Truman

Welcome to this issue of Amanda Zips It Upand as you read this, I’ll be back on the white isle for a party at Pikes. Ibiza Round 2 of 2019.

The Balearics are all set for summer 2019 and once again we’re expecting the ‘pool party’ to dominate the season. And king of the Ibiza pool parties has to be Tony Truman– he of Ocean Beach Ibiza fame and glory.

I thought I’d get into the summer mindset by spending five minutes with Tony discussing what to expect this year at OB and Ibiza in general.

  • Tony, what’s new at OB this summer 2019?

As you know we are always adapting and changing things, but the biggest difference is that our adjoining club lounge, formerly known as Pearl, has been totally remodelled, refurbished and re-branded as the O Beach Lounge & Terrace. It will become a part of the VIP Area of the beach club. It will also host a few promoter parties for up and coming promoters and DJs trying to get established on the party circuit. In the main club, as always, we have given it a makeover with new seating areas as well as an additional few extra beds – you know we love to squeeze them in, ha-ha.

  1. How do you feel about the popularity of the daytime pool party spreading across the Balearics? Ibiza Rocks is now concentrating on the pool parties too.

Yes, I think we have certainly set a trend that people are trying to emulate, and I wish them all the best of luck. I’ve been saying it for years that it’s all about the daytime parties, as this is what people truly love. Most people don’t tend to get the opportunity to party in the sun all day by a pool in their normal everyday home surroundings. Also, I think as you get older, people prefer the outdoor daytime to dark and sweaty clubs.

  1. How is your Hotel Wikiwoo doing on the sunset strip, and will you be extending your hotel empire this summer?

It’s doing unbelievably well. It’s incredible how many advance bookings we have had, plus the reservations in its restaurant are going through the roof. Also, it’s been amazing seeing the response we’ve had for photo shoots & private parties. We are extremely happy with the rapid progress of it all in such a short life span of the hotel.

  1. Any plans for OC merchandise?

Yes, this will really ramp up over next few seasons, especially now we have resolved the trademark and branding issue we’ve had in previous years, but now that’s all been put to bed. Look out for some cool collections coming over next few seasons.

  1. And finally, where would you recommend as your top 5 bars & restaurants in Ibiza?

It’s difficult to choose, as the island is now literally littered with so so many tremendous places covering everyone’s tastes, but if I had to choose, these are my listings, excluding any we own of course.

Bars:

 Hard Rock Rooftop

Cotton Club

Plastik

Teatro

Hostal La Torre

Restaurants:

Tatel

Amante Beach Club (Dave Piccioni)

Ginger

Bambuddha Grove

Thanks Tony.

Onto this week’s instalment of Zips It Upand we explore the CAMPEST Met Gala ever, David Beckham’sfashion faux par and H&M’s Mini Mecollection.

The Campest Met Gala 2019

Each year I write about the The Met Gala, (the annual benefit event for the Costume Institute, held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York), because it is considered one of the world’s biggest fashion events.

It is known for its exclusive guest list, its expensive tickets and – most of all – its extravagant outfits, based on a different theme each year. This year, that theme was “Camp”.

Imagine a style exhibition, based on irony, humour, parody, pastiche, artifice, theatricality and exaggeration. The hallmark of camp is the spirit of extravagance. Camp is esoteric – something of a private code, a badge of identity even, among small urban cliques.

Showing everyone how it was done at the very start of the night was Lady Gaga, who arrived in a billowing pink outfit that was not quite what it seemed at first glance. I could write an entire article about Gaga’s outfits, but we’d be here all day and she’s been well covered. So let’s take a look at some of the others.

Katy Perry turned up as a chandelier. Not just one but two chandeliers in fact. One on her head and one around her waist. The outfit was made in collaboration with Moschino’s Jeremy Scott, who has dressed Perry for the Met Gala several times before.

What most people were wondering was how on earth Perry would manage to sit down for dinner. But she had that covered, with a costume change that saw her morph into a giant burger.

In other costume news, it’s worth noting how lucky it was that Celine didn’t turn up carrying a tent. “At first I was a little bit confused when I heard camp. I wasn’t sure what it meant” she ‘claimed’…

Once she had established she didn’t need to bring a sleeping bag, Celine enlisted fashion house Oscar de la Renta for a dress that took 3,000 hours to create. The result was a champagne-coloured bodysuit, embellished with silvery sequins and a hat made of gold-tinted singed peacock feathers.

Cardi B wore a floor-length oxblood custom Thom Browne gown, made from tulle and silk organza and filled with down, which featured a mammoth train flowing in concentric circles. It took 35 people more than 2,000 hours to make. She likes it like that.

Model Cara Delevingne’s rainbow theme was a nod to the LGBT flag, and the Pride-inspired stripes were completed with similarly multi-coloured platform heels and a Swarovski crystal cane.

The ensemble features in Dior’s haute couture spring/summer 2019 collection. Perhaps the most eye-catching part of her outfit, however, was her hat. The headpiece, made by Machine Dazzle, featured fried eggs, eyeballs, false teeth and bunches of bananas.

Camp.

But the biggest Campfest of the night goes to Harry Styles.

Harry went all out Gucci.

After such a colourful tour wardrobe, Harry took traditional feminine elements like frills, heeled boots, sheer fabric and pearl earrings, rephrasing them as masculine pieces set against the high-waisted tailored trousers and his tattoos.

The look is elegant, it’s camp, but still Harry.

As usual, Kanye West looked absolutely elated to be posing for photographs. Wife Kim Kardashian dressed to impress, with a skin-coloured Maison Mugler design that guaranteed she was the centre of attention. Her “wet look” came complete with beads giving the impression of raindrops washing over her nude body.

Kanye, meanwhile, opted for a simple black jacket that costs less than £40. So at least that’s one outfit that we might just be able to afford.

It’s all great fun and I say, bring on 2020!

David Beckham’s Shock Fashion Faux Par

David Beckham is an icon of our generation who rarely puts a foot wrong in the fashion department. Until now perhaps.

After celebrating his 44th birthday last week, it seems that the former footballer is now putting comfort ahead of his usual style, as he sported socks with sandals, in a fashion faux-pas.

Becks has been known to take fashion risks in the past. From a sarong to matching biker suits with wife Victoria Beckham , the style-conscious star has given most things a try. And to give him credit, he looked fabulous in each and every one.

But this latest choice might be his most “question mark” raising move yet.

The former footballer was seen accessorising a sharp navy-blue suit (winner) with a pair of bright red socks and brown Birkenstock sandals.

But before anyone rushes to copy his socks and sandals combo, we’ll take the charitable view.  David’s decision to rock the trend might not have been entirely his own.

He was filming an advert for his House 99 skincare brand in Dorset when he was papped. Beckham was happily strolling around on set as if he didn’t have a care in the world.. He had probably swapped his usual designer trainers for something much more comfortable – the Birkenstock.

It actually looks good, if you ask me. And the socks HAD to be red.

But, if you’re DB, you could wear Florence & Fred at Tesco and still be crowned GQ Most Stylish Man of The Year.

H&M Mini Me Collection

H&M has launched a very cute ‘mini-me’ collection for mothers and daughters, but you’ll need to move fast to grab the matching sets.

This new summer collection is perfect for you and your little one to ‘twin up’ this summer. Obviously, the older your daughter, the more likely she’ll be appalled by this idea.

The YOU & MErange is resplendent with matching mother and daughter outfits of cool, breezy linen, making the collection perfect for family summer holidays. Just think how ‘insta’ friendly the pictures will look – very Balearic.

H&M says “Take your little one by the hand and have a fun and playful summer in matching outfits!”. There’s no doubt that many will take H&M’s lead this summer.

However, at the risk of labouring the point, you’ll need to act quickly as some of the dresses have already sold out online.

Prices start at £9.99, and go up to £39.99.

Summer 2019 is all about YOU & ME.

Take your little one by the hand and have a fun and playful summer in matching outfits.

… a word from Amanda, The Editor

HOORAY! IT’S MAY.

I think we can officially say ‘welcome to summer’. Can’t we?

After a gorgeous weekend in Ibiza for the opening of Pikes and a party at Pacha, I feel well and truly in summer mode. So much so, that this week’s instalment of Zips It Upis dedicated to getting the summer prep sorted.

Summer mode means the focusing on the tan, the waxing and the wardrobe. It also spells some silly summer fashions hitting the market, as the sun goes to our heads.

I thought I’d briefly mention this one to you, to get us into the swing of things.

THE Marmite of all fashion trends, Crocs, are at the centre of yet another fierce style debate. Yes, as a new version of the pockmarked shoes has sparked controversy online.

In other incarnations embellished with clip-on jewels, lined fur insoles and even made into high heeled wedges, Crocs have caused another Twitter uproar.  The latest update sees mini bum-bags attached to the shoe’s strap.

Released as a collaboration with Japanese fashion brand Beams, the bum-bag Crocs have become one of the most talked about spring trends over-night. As well as the most hated.

They are available in a bright teal with a purple strap pouch, or in reverse – a purple sandal and teal bum bag.  Both have the name of the brands embellished across a little zipped pocket.

Dubiously justified as being ‘practical’, due to the ability to carry around small items (on your feet), I can only say… yeah, right.

And to continue the shocking footwear theme, in this instalment we discover the most UGG-ly trainers on the planet.

In other ‘summer news’, Halima Aden has become the first Muslim model to appear in Sports Illustrated magazine wearing a ‘burkini’. The Somalian beauty features in the May issue wearing the full body number.

This is brilliant for all the young girls who wear a hijab, previously without women to look up to in the fashion industry.
