Balenciaga’s Bin Bags & LV Paint Cans

You’ve heard the expression: you’d look good in a bin bag?

Well, it’s time to put it to the test. Black bin bags just got a whole lot chicer, thanks to Balenciaga. But I’m not talking about WEARING one… we’re talking CARRYING one… designer style.

The Spanish-origin retailer has just launched the ‘trash pouch’… which is exactly what it sounds like. You might mistake it for your bin liner, but this particular accessory comes with a hefty price tag, setting you back £1,469.

Doesn’t that sound like rubbish?

The bag comes in three different colours – black, white and blue, topped with a red or grey lace to tie it together.

Back on planet earth, Balenciaga does thankfully have some self-awareness and knows how ridiculous this is. Their creative director commented: ‘I couldn’t miss an opportunity to make the most expensive trash bag in the world, because who doesn’t love a fashion scandal?’

I guess they’re right.

If bin bags aren’t your thing, how about the Louis Vuitton paint can bag, costing almost £2,000?

Clearly, Louis Vuitton noted what the people at Balenciaga were up to, and decided to give Balenciaga a run for their money, launching a kooky new bag inspired by a can of paint, simplistically named the LV Paint Can bag.

It comes in green, blue, purple, orange, red, and yellow, with a metal handle and adjustable strap. In keeping with other LV staples, these bags come with a designer price tag to match: £1,980.

Don’t knock it just yet though. The collection comes as part of Virgil Abloh’s final LV offering, created before the designer passed away last year. Abloh, who is said to have completed 95% of the collection before his death, was inspired by bold prints and colours used by famous artists.

While the collection will now hold special significance as the late designer’s final LV items, some commentators can’t look past the paint can resemblance of the bag.

On Instagram, one person wrote: ‘Always wanted my very own paint tin. All my hopes and dreams have come true.’ Another commentator noted that whilst she normally loved Louis Vuitton couldn’t get on board with these bags. She wrote: ‘I love LV but this is horrible!’

Over on Twitter, another wrote: ‘Since when is carrying a paint can considered fashion? This is as ridiculous as it can get, ’cause that’s like $2,800. Who wants this???’

Some people, however, did appreciate Abloh’s vision though and shared enthusiasm for the bags. A more positive commentator wrote: ‘Oh my God, love these,’ while another added ‘love this level of ridiculousness’.

The good news? If you don’t have £2k spare, it’d be pretty easy to make your own knockoff. Just give an old can of Dulux a scrub, punch in some holes, and attach a strap. Available in as many colours as your local paint shop has to offer.
